What Are Heat Transfers?

Heat transfers (also called iron-on transfers or HTV - Heat Transfer Vinyl) are designs that you apply to fabric using heat and pressure. They're perfect for customizing your skating practice wear with your name, team logo, motivational quotes, or unique designs!

💡 Why Use Heat Transfers?
  • Customize your practice wear affordably
  • Create unique, one-of-a-kind designs
  • Add your name or team branding

Supplies You'll Need

✅ Heat Transfer Design

✅ Garment

Clean skating apparel (t-shirt, hoodie, leggings, etc.). Works best on cotton or cotton-blend fabrics.

✅ Heat Source

Household iron or heat press. Iron works great for home use!

✅ Hard Surface

Ironing board or hard, flat, heat-safe surface.

✅ Protective Sheet

Parchment paper, Teflon sheet, or thin cotton cloth to protect the transfer.

✅ Optional: Ruler/Tape

For precise placement and alignment.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

1
Prepare Your Workspace
  • Set up your ironing board or hard, flat surface
  • Plug in your iron and set to appropriate temperature (usually cotton/high heat)
  • Turn OFF steam setting - you want dry heat only
  • Gather all supplies within reach
  • Ensure good ventilation in your workspace

⚠️ Important

Always check the specific temperature instructions that come with your heat transfer. Different materials require different heat settings!

2
Prepare Your Garment
  • Wash and dry your garment first (removes sizing and shrinks fabric)
  • Iron the garment to remove all wrinkles
  • Lay garment flat on your work surface
  • Place cardboard inside shirt to prevent transfer bleeding through
  • Ensure the area where you'll apply the transfer is completely smooth
3
Position Your Transfer
  • Decide on placement (center chest, back, sleeve, etc.)
  • Use a ruler or measuring tape for precise centering
  • Mark placement lightly with chalk or tape if needed
  • Place transfer design-side UP on the garment
  • Ensure transfer is straight and positioned correctly
💡 Placement Tips

For chest designs: measure 3-4 inches down from collar. For back designs: measure from shoulder seam. Use tape to hold transfer in place while you work.

4
Apply Heat & Pressure
  • Cover transfer with parchment paper or protective sheet
  • Press iron down firmly with steady, even pressure
  • Hold for 10-15 seconds (check transfer instructions)
  • Don't slide the iron - lift and reposition
  • Apply pressure to all areas of the design
  • For larger designs, work in sections

⚠️ Critical Step

Use FIRM pressure - you need to press hard! Light pressure won't properly adhere the transfer. Think "pressing" not "ironing."

5
Peel the Backing
  • Let the transfer cool for a few seconds
  • Check if your transfer is "hot peel" or "cold peel"
  • Hot peel: Remove backing immediately while still warm
  • Cold peel: Wait until completely cool before peeling
  • Peel slowly and carefully at a 45-degree angle
  • If design lifts with backing, stop! Re-apply heat and try again
6
Final Press (Optional but Recommended)
  • After removing backing, cover design with protective sheet again
  • Press one more time for 5-10 seconds
  • This ensures maximum adhesion and durability
  • Let garment cool completely before wearing

Pro Tips for Perfect Results

🌟 Temperature Matters

Too hot = scorched fabric or melted transfer. Too cool = poor adhesion. Follow the temperature guide that comes with your transfer!

🌟 Pressure is Key

You need FIRM, even pressure. If using an iron, press down hard - much harder than regular ironing. A heat press provides more consistent pressure.

🌟 Test First

If you're nervous, practice on a scrap piece of similar fabric first. This helps you get the feel for timing and pressure.

🌟 Work in Sections

For large designs, press one section at a time, overlapping slightly. This ensures even heat distribution.

Care Instructions for Heat Transfer Apparel

To Make Your Transfer Last:

  • Wait 24 hours before first wash (allows adhesive to fully cure)
  • Turn inside out before washing
  • Wash in cold water on gentle cycle
  • Avoid fabric softener (can break down adhesive)
  • Hang dry or tumble dry low (high heat can damage transfer)
  • Don't iron directly on the transfer (use protective sheet if needed)
  • Don't dry clean garments with heat transfers
💡 Longevity Tip

Properly applied and cared for heat transfers can last 50+ washes! The key is following application instructions precisely and gentle washing.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Problem: Transfer Won't Stick

Solutions:

  • Increase heat (check your iron's actual temperature)
  • Apply more pressure
  • Press for longer (try 5 more seconds)
  • Ensure fabric is completely dry and clean
  • Check that you removed any protective film from transfer

Problem: Transfer Looks Wrinkled or Bubbled

Solutions:

  • Fabric wasn't smooth enough - pre-iron better
  • Not enough pressure applied
  • Try re-pressing with more pressure

Problem: Design Peeling After Washing

Solutions:

  • Wasn't pressed long enough initially
  • Temperature was too low
  • Washed too soon (wait 24 hours)
  • Used fabric softener (avoid it)
  • Dried on high heat (use low or hang dry)
